Roulette is a casino table game and probably the one that has the longest pedigree. The wheel, the main component of the game was actually invented way back in 1655 by a French inventor called Blaise Pascal. Over the years the game grew in popularity but it didn’t make its way to casinos until the mid-1800s.
Roulette's popularity immediately sky-rocketed as word spread around the world of this new and exciting casino game. America was one of the first countries to adopt this casino game from France and until this day, you can still find it in most land-based casinos in the country. They did make a slight change to increase the house edge, but will discuss that in more detail later.
Fast forward a couple of centuries and this game is just as popular as ever. We now have the ability to play the game online as well as at brick and mortar casinos. Alongside software-based virtual roulette games, we can also enjoy roulette in a live dealer format. This involves a fully trained croupier hosting the game from a studio or casino in front of a webcam. As players, we get to see the action play out in real time which negates the need for random number generator software.
So, how can we win at this popular table game? That is the point of this guide. It has all you need to know to increase your chances at the roulette table. Whether playing at a local casino, on virtual roulette tables, or even at a live dealer table, you will be able to use the valuable information provided here. Can We Consistently Win at Roulette?
While we all have access to this traditional table game, the most common question regarding roulette is whether there is a way to consistently win at roulette. Well, it is a casino game, and that means the house has to make money. No casino would exist if it didn't have an edge in the games it provides to players.
In the case of roulette, this is 2.7% (if European roulette) which means over an extended period, a casino will have a 2.7% advantage over players. In simple terms, from every $100 you spend playing roulette, on average you should lose $2.70 of it. Of course, it doesn't work like that on each session but this is the expected return a casino will make from players.
The key is to break that edge and use strategies to try to beat the casino. There are many roulette strategies that players use and you will read about a few of those later. Just remember that each spin is random and independent of any other - so no strategy or system can guarantee success.
Quick Roulette Strategy Tips
Before we delve into some of the most popular roulette strategies used by players, there are a few tips you should know before trying them for yourselves at the tables.
Know How to Play Roulette
We wrote this guide on the premise you have a general understanding of how roulette works, including the bets, payouts and odds available. If you do not, we recommend you do before you play. You need to learn about the different bets that you can place, your chances of winning those bets and the odds involved.
Roulette is not a difficult game to play despite looking confusing at first glance but it takes a little while to understand all the above. Once you know the game, it becomes second nature.
Practice Playing Free Roulette
The biggest tip to take on board would be to practise for free rather than using your hard-earned money. Many online casinos offer a free version of their virtual roulette games, so make your way to one and practise for as long as you need.
Although there is no actual skill required to play this classic table game, you will need to get used to placing the many bets that are available. You certainly do not want your first experience of roulette to be at a packed table in your local casino with other players looking over your shoulder.
Understand the Difference Between American and European Roulette
At first glance, both the European and American variations of roulette might look the same. They are very similar apart from one thing, the addition of a Double Green 00 on the American roulette wheel.
This may not seem to be a big deal but it actually affects your chances of winning. That one extra position on the reel lowers your chance of winning your bets. For example, if you bet on a single number to come in, a European Roulette wheel gives you a 1 in 37 of that happening. On the American variation, that is a 1 in 38 chance.
This gives an increased house edge. American roulette has a house edge of 5.26% compared to the 2.70% of roulette. Casinos stand a better chance of winning if you play American roulette.
Both variations also payout the same money, so it always makes sense to play the European variation. You have a higher chance of winning the same amount of money.
Choose the Right Table Limits
Before you start to play at any roulette table whether online or offline, you first need to match your bankroll to the right table limits. Your bankroll is how much money you have set aside for your session at the table.
Let’s say you had $100 dollars. Going to a roulette table that requires a minimum stake of $50 is a bad idea. You could lose your bankroll within two spins of the wheel. A general rule of thumb is to establish how long you want to play for and adjust your bets that way.
A roulette wheel will spin around 40 times in an hour, so if you are planning to spend three hours playing, you will want enough money to fund 120 spins. If you have $240 dollars in your bankroll, that means you can wager $2 per spin for those 120 spins. Should your bankroll be double that, you can choose to double your wager per spin.
Well-Known Roulette Strategies
Over the decades and even centuries, a good deal of roulette strategies have emerged which promise to help you beat the casino. Unfortunately, none are 100% guaranteed to leave you winning profit during each session at the table. Some players still swear by them however, and that is why we will take you through three of the most popular.
The Martingale Strategy
The Martingale strategy is the most commonly used roulette strategy in the world. This is probably because it is easy to learn and even easier to put into practise. Essentially, you place an evens bet and each time you lose that bet; you place the same bet but for double the amount. The premise is that at some point, you will win and break even on all of your bets placed.
The steps to using the Martingale strategy:
- Choose an even bet such as black/red, odd/even, or 1-18/19-36
- Place the smallest wager possible
- If you win, keep your winnings and place the same wager again.
- If you lose, double the wager on the same bet.
- If you continue to lose, keep doubling your wager.
- When you win, keep your winnings and reset back to the smallest wager possible.
- Rinse and repeat.
While this is a simple strategy, there is no guarantee it will earn you profits. Additionally, you need a large bankroll in case of a series of losing bets. Let’s say the smallest wager is $5, should you lose five times in a row, your sixth wager will need to be $160. You can imagine how big that wager would need to be after losing the next five.
The Martingale can be a risky strategy to play if you have strung a few losses together. Ultimately, huge wagers may be required just to recover your losses and win your original $5. A time may come where betting hundreds of dollars for that $5 is too big of a gamble.
The James Bond Roulette Strategy
Another strategy to consider is the James Bond roulette strategy made famous by the man himself. This requires a large bankroll, especially if you lose a few bets. At a minimum, you will need $200 for one bet. Using this strategy, you will only lose should the ball land on any number between 1 and 12.
We also have an entire blog dedicated to the James Bond Roulette Strategy here...
This is how it works:
- Wager $140 on the 19-36 evens bet (payout is 1-1)
- Wager $50 on the six line bet 13-18 (payout is 5-1)
- Wager $10 on the green 0 (payout is 35-1)
- Wait for the result.
If the ball lands on any number between 19 and 36, you win the evens bet and receive $80 profit ($280 minus the $200 staked). Should you hit a number in the 13-18 six line bet, you win a profit of $100 ($300 minus the $200 staked). The least likely but most lucrative result is landing the green 0. When this happens, you will win $160 profit ($360 minus $200 staked).
Of course, there is a bit of risk attached should you hit a number between 1 and 12 for a few consecutive spins but for many players, that is a risk worth taking. Just 12 numbers stand in the way of coming away a winner.
The Paroli Roulette Strategy
Where the Martingale strategy involves increasing your wager after every loss, the Paroli roulette strategy does the opposite. You increase your wager after a win but only for a string of bets. This type of strategy negates the risks of perhaps needing to lay huge wagers to recoup losses. Sometimes those bets can get so big that the table limit forces the strategy to break down.
This is how the Paroli system works:
- You choose an even-money bet such as red/black or odd/even, etc.
- You wager $10 for your first turn.
- Should you win, you increase your wager to $15
- Win again, double your wager to $20
- You continue to increase your bet by $5 until your seventh turn which would be $35
- For your seventh turn, you double your bet to $70
- On the eight turn you can choose to double once again to $140
- At this point, you rest back to step 2.
This is a betting strategy that rewards long win streaks but without too much risk if losing. By the time you get to the seventh bet, you have already made enough profit from the previous six bets to place them all as a single bet. Win that and you can then choose if you would like a further double or nothing bet with all of your winnings. Always stop on before the 9th bet.
Found any strategies you think can help you at the roulette table? Then why not try them? Just remember to only wager with money you can afford to lose and to practise good bankroll management.
